Sonic Branding for REVA: A Case Study in Digital-Native Commerce
REVA is a conceptual eCommerce platform created as part of Fonetik’s internal benchmarking programme. Inspired by resale marketplaces like Vinted and Depop, it was designed to explore how sound can build trust and personality in peer-to-peer commerce.
Defining the Brief and Strategic Direction
The starting point was to explore how can sound make peer-led commerce feel more reassuring and distinctive, without tipping into gimmicks or retail stereotypes.
Using the Fonetik Framework™, we mapped out the moments that mattered most, from onboarding and listing items to receiving offers and completing transactions. The identity needed to feel upbeat and human, with enough restraint to avoid becoming distracting.
We focused on inclusivity, clarity, and ease. Key touchpoints such as item sold confirmations, new message alerts, and payment declined notifications influenced the tonal direction. The goal was energy with control — expressive, but never excessive.
Deliverables: A Sonic Identity Built for Interaction
The REVA sonic logo is built around a compact melodic phrase (G5–A#5–A#5–A#5–G#5–G#5–G#5), played on tuned plucks with a soft transient and shimmer tail. The movement rises and resolves cleanly, creating a recognisable signature suited to app launches, social content, and brand intros.
The brand anthem leans into a future bass / hyper-pop feel, structured around a loopable Cm7–G#–Fm–G# progression. Syncopated mallets, layered pads, and subtle vocal textures give the track a digital-native energy, while maintaining enough warmth to feel approachable. Designed for promos, unboxing content, and campaign videos, it captures a sense of momentum without overpowering the brand.
The UX cues were designed for everyday use. An upward chime (G#4–C5–D#5) marks a successful sale. A crisp tonal ping (E5–G#5–C#6) signals a new message. A downward gesture with light dissonance (G#5–F#5–E5) communicates payment decline clearly but calmly. Each sound was tested against mobile interface mockups to ensure it felt natural in context.

A Sound System That Feels Native to Commerce
REVA shows how intentional sound can make digital resale platforms feel more confident and cohesive. Instead of relying on generic cues, the identity builds recognition through repetition and consistency. For marketplaces, resale platforms, and DTC brands alike, the project demonstrates how sound can quietly reinforce trust, signal action, and give digital commerce a more distinctive voice.
